Here's the story of how the bikini became a necessity for every woman's wardrobe. The first bikini was invented overseas by French engineer Louis Reard in 1946. He named it after an atomic bomb testing site “Bikini Atoll” referring to its explosive effect on fashion.
In America however, people were slow and reluctant to accept the provocative garment. The bathing suit was banned until early 1960’s during the sexual revolution. Women began to wear them on the silver screen and the trend caught on. The first shipments of bikinis sold out almost instantly across America.
The bikini has evolved into the mini-bikini, the Monokini, the Tankini, and so on. The possibilities are endless, although the trend appears to continuously favor smaller and more revealing swimwear throughout the decades.
