Bikini On, Wax Off

What is it?

bikini-waxing.jpg

Bikini waxing involves removal of the pubic hairs around your lower private area with wax. Waxing of any method has benefits for you and your swimsuit. No hairs will peep thru your swimsuit bottom, and you’ll feel silky and smooth. You won’t need to shave as often or worry about stubble down there.

Don’t be afraid to try it! It’s really not as bad and painful as it sounds. Start with a regular wax, and then go for a Brazilian or French next time if you’re comfortable with it.

Make sure you know exactly how each method is performed, so there are no surprises and you'll be extra prepared. Terminology may vary slightly with different salons, but here are the most commonly practiced waxes.

Bikini Wax
This method involves removing the hair with cold or hot wax around the crotch area to contour a triangular shape. (Also called the bikini line, where your bikini bottom would cover). A full bikini wax is when more hair is removed, leaving a smaller patch of pubic hair on the crotch area. This type of waxing is considered the least painful.

The Procedure
The entire method will be done in only 15-20 minutes. With you lying down, your underwear may be kept on or you may be supplied with disposable paper thin panties. The professional will ask you to shift your panty (from the front) to the left, right and down so that some hairs will be revealed without showing any private parts. So she will actually wax three parts of your crotch (left, right and top) forming a triangle.

Anything below your triangle will be left untouched. Hot wax will be applied directly onto your skin. Then wax removal strips will cover the wax and rip! You’ll know if your esthetician is good if she’s quick and only rip once or twice on each side. So minimal pain! Afterwards the esthetician will apply some lotion to your sensitive area to lessen the burning sensation.

French Bikini Wax
Similar to a bikini wax, but the side hairs are also removed along your private area. The French bikini wax is a continuation of hair removal from the bikini line to just before the bum. In this method, the panties must come off! Otherwise it’d be too difficult for your esthetician to reach low enough between your legs. It will be more painful than the regular bikini wax, but as you maintain your wax job, it’ll get less painful every time.

The Procedure
Just like a bikini wax, but no panties on. Don’t be surprised if the esthetician asks you to spread your legs apart, or in any weird positions. She’s just doing her job…not trying to embarrass you!

Brazilian Bikini Wax
This one’s simple, all hairs are removed…all of it.

“A Brazilian bikini wax is like unto clear-cutting a forest.”

While the results will be well worth it, the process won’t be as simple. Without a doubt, this is really the ultimate wax job because it involves the most intimate and sensitive areas of your body to be waxed. This is just like a French bikini wax except expect more waxing done. The pain will be exceptional the first time, but it will lessen the more you get it done.

The final result is very smooth and silky skin that will last up to 3 weeks!

The Procedure
Your esthetician may ask you to hold your legs upwards (like Pilates) or by your head while you lie down to get to the hairs near your private parts. It will be awkward the first few times you go, since a stranger is working around your private area, but you’ll become more comfortable as you frequent the same salon.

The pain will lessen and will be a breeze sooner than you know it. You can always request a “landing strip” left behind, just tell your esthetician ahead of time.

Getting it Done

Before you even attempt to do this at home, don't do this at home! I suggest going to a salon to get your first bikini wax, whether it be a Brazilian, French or any bikini wax. Waxing is very messy, and requires skillful and fast hands to perform.

Going to a specialist will give you a good idea how it’s done and what it’s like if you plan to do it yourself in the future. Plus it isn’t that expensive if you ask a girlfriend that gets bikini waxes already. My local salon charges $10! But keep in mind that a French and Brazilian wax costs more.

If it is your first time, and you normally shave it is a good idea to let your pubic hairs to grow for at a few weeks so it’s long enough. Somewhere around half an inch to an inch is acceptable. After your first wax, maintenance is minimal. You won’t need to do anything 2-3 weeks in between waxing.

Don’t be afraid to talk to your salon’s professional esthetician about waxing, let them know exactly what you want. Make sure you’re comfortable with the idea and don’t jump right to a Brazilian bikini wax unless you’ve had some type of waxing done before. In the end you’ll enjoy the overall experience and will leave satisfied with the results.
