Learn how to make a
Body Painted Swimsuit from a Pro

A body painted swimsuit is not easy to make right off the bat, but here are the basic steps to start. As you gradually learn more and more, you will be able to achieve the look you desire.

Mark Greenawalt, expert body painter tells us how to get into the art of body painting. He specializes in body painting in all styles, realistic and surreal. If you're around Orlando, you have the privilege to learn from him in person as he is teaching a few classes there. Click below for more info.

Face and Body Art International Convention

Beginner

Mark suggests for beginners to try cost effective alternatives to professional paints such as children’s face paints. They are available at Wal-Mart, or craft and hobby shops. Face paints are really cheap, and should cost at most $2-$5.

These paints are typically not waterproof, so it’s not recommended for body painted swimsuits. The suits would quickly wash away. The hands and arms are a good area to start with, or just the back because it’s flat.

For the kids, it seems only appropriate to do face painting with the paints, but for the adults, body painting can be a lot of fun. Face paints are a cheap and easy way to give body painting a try.

Advanced

The next step up would be paints found in novelty and adult shops. There is a huge variety to choose from, even glow-in-the-dark paint!

Liquid Latex paints are popular because of its texture and ability to dry to a semi-solid. It is a thick paint that is best applied with a sponge brush. You have to peel it to remove it…ouch! Be careful when removing, body hairs will peel with the dried paint.

With liquid latex you will be able to achieve the look of a body painted swimsuit, but it is not waterproof, so it is just for show.

Professional

The final level is usually left to professional body painters like Mark. It involves special alcohol paints that are typically applied with an airbrush. These paints are waterproof and allow people to go swimming and not lose their body painted swimsuit.

So go ahead and unleash your creativity and start your own body painting project!
